Liz and her band plays tracks from her debut EP ‘Mama’, released 26 May, along with material from her wider repertoire.

Liz sings about her experience as a mixed-heritage woman and artist living in the UK, and tell a personal and intimate story of identity, culture and belonging, as well as offer reflections on love, loss and life-learnings. You’ll hear a rich selection of cross-pollinating influences from Folk and Jazz to Reggae, Hip Hop and Soul.

“I’ve always wanted to create fun and uplifting music with a social and spiritual conscience. These songs take particular inspiration from the Congolese folk music I grew up listening to, as well as other diasporic musical styles and traditions. The EP pays special tribute to my late parents Georgina and Wangoy, with the title track ‘Mama’, the first song I wrote in Lingala, dedicated to my mother who travelled to the Congo to live and work as a midwife.”

Expect groove-driven riffs and sun-fuelled rhythms, loop-pedal experiments and soul-infused vocals, with catchy hooks and harmonies in English and Lingala. This is set to be an intimate, interactive and energising experience to remember.

“Liz Ikamba’s music is genre-bending and timeless. Captivating songs and a distinctively rich and soulful vocal influenced by greats such as Nina Simone and Sade. Liz’s music blends stories and rhythms from her own African-European roots, with experiences and musical influences from all over the world. (She has) an embodied openess to her delivery, and a soothing warmth to her message.” – Kassia Zermon, Artistic Director, The Rose Hill Music & Arts Venue

For this show, Liz alongside her band, and plays songs from her newly released debut EP ‘Mama’, as well as material from her wider originals repertoire that brings together Blues, Jazz and Nu Soul influences.
