  • Cabaret Legend Barb Jungr returns to Crazy Coqs with RIVER, a stunning collection of songs themed around flowing water accompanied by her long time collaborator Simon Wallace on piano.

“One of the world’s great cabaret singers, England’s Barb Jungr is a genuine original, deploying warmth, high drama and sensitive musicality to reinvent everything she sings. Her supple and versatile voice glows like a hearth on a winter’s day, and her emotional intelligence is faultless: She knows just how a song should feel.” Time Out New York

This show was a sellout in 2010 at New York’s Metropolitan Room. Now, to celebrate the release of those very concerts recorded live at New York’s Metropolitan Room in October 2010 by Jean Pierre Perreaux, remastered now by Simon Wallace, Barb brings River to Crazy Coqs. Containing some of the most beautiful river songs including those by the formidable Bruce Springsteen, Ewan MaColl, Ray Davies and Joni Mitchell, Simon Wallace brings his sensitivity, joy and virtuosic musicianship to the arrangements and accompaniment.

“Empathy is her game, and few singers in any genre extend themselves more deeply into the lives of others.” New York Times

One of the most accomplished British singers of her generation, Barb Jungr’s formidable talent as a singer, composer and lyricist is equalled by her ability to re-interpret familiar songs and reveal new depths of meaning and beauty.

“it’s as if Edith Piaf and Nick Cave had a love-child, who was adopted by Carmen McRae” Glam Adelaide

Whether you are just discovering her work for the first time or you are one of her world-wide legion of die-hard fans, whether she is premiering brand-new, original material or revisiting treasured classics from her five decades of performance, an evening spent with Barb Jungr will be a revelation.Internationally acclaimed, Jungr continues to evolve her signature style while her transcendent artistry both live, recorded, and in theatre, continues to delight audiences.

“ The programme, loosely but intelligently built around the theme of flowing water pulls together some spellbinding material, from Ewan MacColl’s Sweet Thames Flow Softly to Bruce Springsteen’s The River. Her own song Last Orders, Mersey Square was an autobiographical journey back to a youth spent in bus shelters. One of the most emotionally intense passages came when she took on the masculine contours of Ol’ Man River, her voice turning alternately light and dark and rising to an epic climax. A spell-binding moment. Yet she somehow went one better in her tribute to Sam Cooke on A Change Is Gonna Come.” The Times
