Tina May

"That great rarity...a singer who enhances a song." The Observer
"Great Britain's finest jazz singer." L.A. Jazz Scene
"Handles the classics as the gems they still are." The Guardian

The British jazz, cabaret and recording artiste Tina May appears with Nikki Iles to present DIVAS, a programme of beautiful songs reflecting the journeys of both singers and songwriters alike. Tina conjures the atmosphere of every song - be it the Left Bank of Piaf's Paris or a club date in New York City with Peggy Lee - with songs by composers such as Michel Legrand, Bernstein, Phil Springer/Y.Harburg, Arlen, Ellington.

Tina has been singing and recording with Nikki Iles since 1996; their recent duo album Change of Sky received great press internationally.

Tina grew up, greatly influenced by her parents' jazz record collection, containing such illustrious composers and artistes as Duke Ellington and Fats Waller. Tina has now recorded numerous CDs of her own, as a leader, and has also recorded and performed Ellington's 'Sacred Music' with the Stan Tracey Orchestra and been a featured guest on many other recordings from jazz and soul to fusion.

In her early teens, Tina performed with the Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra, before entering the University of Wales, Cardiff, where she performed with jazz musicians on the South Wales jazz scene. While studying in Paris, Tina met and performed with such legends as Kenny Clarke and Roger Guerin. She continues to apear regularly in Paris, as well as at prestigious jazz clubs, concert venues and festivals throughout the world.

The London Observer's jazz critic Dave Gelly, in reviewing her ever lengthening number of CD's, has long considered "Tina May has an unerring instinct for how to treat a song." Tina's musical heart may well be rooted in the music of Waller, Ellington, Gershwin, and Monk, and the jazz tradition. However, she is not a performer who remains musically static: she is a thoroughly modern twenty-first century artiste.

Before and during the shows, cocktails, wines, champagnes and snacks are available. We would also encourage you to enjoy a meal in the Brasserie before or after a performance.
