Infinitely versatile, Salena Jones swings from jazz standards to more intimate material. Whether singing Cole Porter, Duke Ellington or Gershwin jazz standards from the Great American Songbook, or more contemporary songs written or popularised by Sting, Lionel Richie, Bacharach or Stevie Wonder, Salena Jones' set list always showcases her great talent to reach almost any kind of audience.
Described throughout her career by critics as one of the worlds great jazz singers, and by some as "not altogether a jazz singer", Salena Jones is almost impossible to categorise; the attraction lies in her voice quality pure and simple. Salena Jones' cool, relaxed phrasing and delivery is wonderfully free from artifice. At the lower end of the register, her voice is smoky and sensual. Not for her, though, vivacious displays of double-time gymnastics or virtuoso scat choruses; she is a storyteller and although ballads are her strongest suit, she swings with the very best.
Having recorded 43 solo albums, Salena Jones has sung with Louis Armstrong, Hank Jones, Sarah Vaughan, Maynard Ferguson, Lionel Hampton, Dudley Moore, Roy Budd, and Toots Thielemans, Antonio Carlos Jobim, the BBC Big Band and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
"America's loss is Britain's gain - Jones is pure class. We should tempt her back more often"- The Times Arts
