Paul Ryan at 65

Featuring Kenny Clayton and Guests

Paul Ryan returns to Live At Zédel for a very special concert on the occasion of his 65th birthday. A favourite vocalist of the late jazz critic Jack Massarik, Ryan is noted for his impeccable phrasing and sensitive reading of a lyric as well as his deep knowledge of the Great American Songbook. As a result, his choice of songs is far from obvious and every set is guaranteed to contain a few neglected classics and rarities.

As usual, you can expect a wealth of anecdotes about the songs and their composers and Ryan may also draw on his parallel career as a distinguished writer on the arts for many leading publications as well as author of several books. Having interviewed a raft of stars including Peter Ustinov, Catherine Deneuve and Jeanne Moreau he has a few backstage stories to share.

But music will be the central element and Ryan will be joined by his regular partner, pianist Clayton whose long career has seen him provide musical direction for such major stars as Petula Clark, Matt Monro and Dick Haymes and whose brilliant keyboard skills are matched by his irreverent humour. With a few surprises and special guests, this birthday party promises to be a perfect post-Christmas treat.

"(Ryan sings) with a knowledge and understanding of the nuances and wit of the great lyricists… each (song) a narrative… personal and poignant, opening up a thousand memories" - Matthew Wright, Jazzwise
