LondonJazz TransLATES is a monthly series on Friday nights, starting at 10.30pm. Each session of the series celebrates the directness of expression and communication that vocalists can achieve when performing songs in their mother tongue. Think of the series as hassle-free travel for people who don't have the time to plan, or to take a weekend away. Order a drink, house lights down, and you're taken - in the mind- straight to a foreign country and connected directly to the emotional heart of a different culture.
The series is devised, and the singers and songs will be introduced and explained by jazz journalist, Sebastian Scotney, editor of LondonJazz News:
The first of the LondonJazz TransLATES series
takes us to Holland, with a Dutch-themed programme from
Rosalie Genay. Rosalie is a completely charming
Dutch-born, London-based vocalist and songwriter who has appeared
in various venues in Australia, Europe and the UK: Bb Jazz Club -
Berlin, Chet's Jazz Bar - Amsterdam, and all over London. She
recently recorded her debut album REALMS, with pianist Rebecca
Nash, which included the Dutch version of Leonard Cohen's Suzanne.
Rosalie will also pay a personal tribute to 'Europe's First Lady of
Jazz' Rita Reys, also known in Holland as the 'Empress of Timing'.
Dutch speakers will discover The Crazy Coqs to be one of the most
'gezellige' places in London; for the rest of us, expect Rosalie to
blow away some of the preconceptions about the Dutch language
within the first minute.
With Barry Green on piano.
