Join television and film actress and singer, Camilla Beeput (Save Me, Peep Show, Grantchester, Westside Story) as she returns to the London stage for five nights in what The Times called "A bravura display", celebrating the life of one of the most significant black figures in 20th century entertainment - the iconic singer, actor and activist; Lena Horne.
Under the musical direction of Alex Webb (Cafe Society Swing, David McAlmont presents Billie Holiday at Carnegie Hall) the creative mentorship of Clarke Peters (Five Guys Named Moe, The Wire), and the inspired direction of Maxwell Golden ( Sadler's Wells, Southbank Centre, Fagin's Twist), this intimate evening includes excerpts from the critically acclaimed musical theatre production Stormy: The Life of Lena Horne, in which Beeput embodies the enigmatic star as well as a number of Horne's loves, ghosts and demons, including Ava Gardner, Billie Holiday and Cab Calloway.
Supported by a five-piece band - Webb (piano & MD), Miles Danso (double bass), Cheryl Alleyne (drums), Erica Charles (tenor sax, clarinet, flute) and Sue Richardson (trumpet) - playing a host of original and classic musical numbers that evoke the eras of Horne's long and ground-breaking career, audiences are transported back to1920s Harlem, the Golden Age of Hollywood, through to WWII and the Civil Rights Movement, culminating in Horne's ultimate triumph on Broadway.
Written by Beeput herself to both address the need for more female writers and create roles for women that celebrate diversity, this extraordinary one-woman musical show promises to be a truly unforgettable experience.
