Hal Cazalet: Play on Words

Hal Cazalet makes his debut at Live At Zédel to celebrate the centenary of PG Wodehouse on Broadway and his fellow wordsmiths.

Featuring special guests Janie Dee and Barbara Moore, with Simon Beck on piano and directed by Hugh Wooldridge.

Cazalet, the multi-accomplished step Great-Grandson of Wodehouse, introduces his favourite lyrics, songs and poems celebrating the birth of the Broadway musical and the very best theatrical writing of the last 100 years.

Featuring the songs of PG Wodehouse, Jerome Kern, George and Ira Gershwin, Alan Jay Lerner, Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Adam Guettel, Noël Coward, Stephen Sondheim,Tim Rice, Dudley Moore, and a few surprises...

Cazalet has created many leading roles for world premiere operas, including Nicholas in Tod Machover's Pulitzer Prize nominated Death and the Powers (Monte Carlo Opera, Boston's Majestic Theatre, Chicago Opera Theatre, The Dallas Opera - Live Cinema Broadcast), Gerard in Philip Glass's Les Enfants Terribles (BAM Opera House, New York and World Tour (recording on Nonesuch records) and Charles in The Music Programme (Polish National Opera and The Linbury Studio, ROH).

He has made numerous appearances with American pianist Steven Blier at The New York Festival of Song (NYFOS), a concert series founded by Leonard Bernstein. He has also performed at the Library of Congress, DC with Sylvia McNair in The Land Where The Good Songs Go, a show based on the songs of P G Wodehouse and Kern, and most recently appeared in The Richard Rodgers Dynasty at The Kaufmann Centre, New York City. He is currently writing a musical on Oscar Wilde's fairy tale The Happy Prince.

Simon Beck (pianist)

Alongside being a music supervisor/director of West End and touring theatre, Beck has enjoyed a varied concert and cabaret career conducting/playing piano for such stars as Christina Bianco, Stephanie J Block, Susan Boyle, Barbara Cook, Cynthia Erivo, Maria Friedman, Haydyn Gwynne, Andrew Lippa, Lorna Luft, Millicent Martin, Lee Mead, Elaine Paige, and Monty Python, as well as concerts with the BBC Concert Orchestra.
